Dam Pretty

From I-15, take the Orem 8th North exit (exit 275) and go East. Once you cross State Street, migrate over to the left hand lane until you get to the mouth of Provo Canyon. There the road will split, and you want to take the left fork up the canyon. Just follow the road over Deer Creek Dam (that's 1) and along the lake. You'll wind up at a signal in Heber City, where you will turn left onto U.S. 40. Chick's Cafe is a good place to have breakfast or lunch, with Granny's an excellent choice for lunch (excellent shakes!). There's also Dairy Keen, with it's model trains circulating around the ceiling.

Head on out of town past Jordanelle Dam (that's 2) and Reservoir. If you want to visit Park City, watch for the turn-off. If you are riding in a group, it's always fun to ride through town and worry the tourists and tourist-trap operators. Follow U.S. 40 until it meets I-80, and head West towards Salt Lake City. If you visit Park City, you can also take state route 224 out of town to get to I-80 and go West as above. Watch for state route 65, (Exit 134) which goes towards Emigration Canyon and East Canyon. Just to the west of this junction is Mountain Dell Reservoir (that's 3).

Heading East on UT 65, you'll pass Little Dell Reservoir (that's 4), then come to where you choose between Emigration or East Canyons-- take the right fork to East Canyon. The road will begin to look like somebody's driveway, but it's still UT 65. When you get to the switchbacks ("20 mph" turns) watch out for BDCs coming the other way in your lane. At the summit is a turnout where you can take a break or use the restrooms. There are even park benches.

Past the summit, the road is almost as twisty, and just as enjoyable. You'll then hit the flats and a lake (East Canyon Reservoir). There will be a turn off to the left onto UT 66 near the end of the lake. It is easy to miss since there is only one little sign.

Once you are on UT 66, there will be East Canyon National Park, a nice place for a picnic or swimming if the weather permits.

Just past the park is East Canyon dam (that's 5) on the left. Looks very dramatic. Follow UT 66 all the way to Morgan, another nice town. I have heard good things about the Spring Chicken Restaurant, but haven't dined there myself.

There is also a nice city park in Morgan where you can have lunch. If you keep going down the same road, it intersects I-84.

You can go West to Ogden on I-84 then go South on I-15 back to Orem, but I prefer to go East on I-84 to I-80, then go West towards Salt Lake (re-tracing the piece between U.S. 40 and UT 65) because it's a much prettier route, passing by Echo Reservoir (that's 6) then, as you pass Wanship, Rockport Lake in the distance (that's 7!). In fact, it's pretty all the way to I-215, which you can take West towards I-15 then to Orem. The turn from I-215 is easy to miss, so watch for it. As soon as you exit I-215, you have to fork left for Orem or right for Salt Lake.

A variation would be to turn right from U.S. 40 onto I-80, then take I-84 to Morgan, and so on until UT 65 takes you to I-80, which will take you back to Orem as before.

I can see that I need to add a few pics of scenery other than dams. Coming up!
